Profile of Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto By the Grace of allah and the generous support of our community MUSLIM WELFARE CENTRE came into being in the year 1993. It was set up two dedicated 'Senior Citizens', late Major Muhammad Abbas ali and his beloved wife, Sarwar Jahan Begum.

In the owrd of Major & Mrs. Abbas Ali " We had to put in our heart and soul; we had to fight against odd to step in the field of humanitarian service... We had the urge to do it but what could we do with empty pockets that too in a country where we had just landed."

Muslim Welfare Centre was established with the interest free loan of fourteen thousand dollars from a well know Muslim journalist of Toronto. "It was amiracle of Allah, it was a golden opportunity to fulfill our ardent desire to serve the HUMANITY in distress... We jumped in the field of welfare of the needy with the banner SERVICE TO HUMANITY IS SERVICE TO ALLAH... We established a Halal Food Bank in a small room hardly 12" x 12". We started serving the needy with grocery irrespective of RELIGION, NATIONALITY, CASTE OR CREED. Within a couple of years time, we were not only able to clear the loan but when we looked at the bank balance it had soard to eight thousand dollars," wrote the late Major abbas remmembering the early days of his organization.

"Later Br. Qaiser Naqvi joined us, he proved himself to be an asset to Muslim Welfare Centre. Our concerted efforts paid off, we did the spade work to set up a home for needy women and children." wrote late Major Abbas.

The concerted efforts of the threee individuals paid off and the organization took roots in earnest. Soon, the diedcated team started to grow. Realizing an urgent need of the community, MWC set itself the challenge of setting up a 'Home' for women and children in distree. This was one of MWC's first major projects which, with the grace of Allah and staunch support of the community, came to fruition in 1996 after a long and hard campaign. Under the able leadership and keen guidance of Major Abbas, other project to help the needy soon followed; some of our main achievements are enumerated here;

This 'Home' is the first of its kind in north America. so far we have served over 3500 single women and mothers with children irrespective of their backgrounds. this Home was set-up a cost of over half a million dollars. We are proud to say that the entire initial cost was funded by our community.

At presents, we are operating two schools in poor localities of Karachi and providing education, from kindergarden to high school level, to over 650 children. About 250 of these children are sponsored by our donors and the rest are subsidised from the organization's funds. It costs only $1 a day, or $30 a month to sponsor a child. The child receives free education, uniform, books, stationary, shoe, etc. Support is also provided to the child's family in terms of grocery assistance on a monthly basis, to help them cope and encourage the family to keep their child in the school.
